Mayo again highlighted their credentials as serious All-Ireland contenders as they made light work of dismantling Roscommon in this Connacht semi-final meeting. Played in front of almost 20,000 spectators the gulf between division 1 and the rest was once again all too plain to see as James Horan’s men waltzed to a 12-point win.
Roscommon began brightly and bagged the first two scores of the contest but once Mayo opened their account after 12 minutes they never looked back. Trailing by nine points at the break (0-13 to 0-9 ) any hopes of a Rossie comeback were little more than wishful thinking.
Mayo continued to maintain their superiority all over the field and while they didn’t manage to bag a goal they kicked an impressive 21 points. While backing Mayo to win anything comes with a health warning I can’t help feeling this could be their year. For Roscommon, attention now turns to round two of the qualifiers.
