There was a scramble to be first in the door as Burgess of Athlone launched its biggest ever stock disposal sale on Wednesday this week.
The queue stretched down the street on Wednesday morning as Burgess opened its doors to its loyal customers for a two-day private customer event, before opening the sale to the general public this morning [Friday June 14].
All of the department store’s present merchandise is on sale, with €484,000 worth of stock to sell, in order to make room for the incoming autumn/winter ranges. Burgess owner and manager, Rosie Boles, explained that due to an unusually slow selling season Burgess had found that some departments were overstocked.
“We have had a slow selling season, and have lots of autumn/ winter stock on order, with deliveries coming in next week. So we are doing things a little differently this year and started our summer sale earlier than usual,” explained Ms Boles.
Loyal customers got first pick of the bargains on Wednesday and Thursday, with huge crowds flocking to the Midlands’ largest department store to snap up a bargain. The wider public will be able to avail of the super sale starting today, Friday.
“We have a great crowd here, and they are getting great value - there are lots of Burgess bags around the town! We have fantastic value on all our summer stock, including fashion, accessories, homeware, and bedware, with up to half price in all departments. I would urge customers to come in early to get the best bargains,” said Ms Boles.
There is also an unprecendented 10 per cent off all school uniforms until the end of June.
Ms Boles said she is hoping to move as much of the €484,000 worth of stock as possible over the course of the sale. Burgess is open from 10am-8pm Friday, 9.30am-6pm on Saturday, and 12-6pm on Sunday.
