If the bookies and the people on the street are to be believed John Evans would be better advised to bring his side for a swim in Hodson Bay rather than to their Connacht semi-final meeting with Mayo in Castlebar on Sunday where they are expected to be very much out of their depth.
There is no denying that Mayo set the standard west of the Shannon and are worthy favourites. They have been holding their own in division one while Roscommon are operating out of division three.
Having previously been in charge of Tipperary, Roscommon boss John Evans is no stranger to being an underdog. He is hoping that Donie Shine will be available for selection having missed much of the year so far with a hamstring problem. Peter Domican will not be part of his plans however as he is decided not to rejoin the county set-up following St Brigid’s All-Ireland club success.
While Roscommon are no strangers to causing upsets I don’t see it happening for them this weekend. I expect Mayo, even without Cillian O’Connor, to progress to the decider. If Roscommon manage to keep within the five point handicap being offered by the bookies they will have done well.
