Mullingar has produced some fine performing talent to date, and Emmet Cahill (22 ) is a man whose time has certainly come!
Born in 1990 into a family of accomplished musicians, Emmet began to learn to play the piano at five and began voice training at seven. While attending St Finian’s College he studied piano, organ and violin, but his true passion was always singing, and he was awarded a place on the Music Performance degree at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
During this time Emmet performed on numerous occasions at the Gaiety Theatre and as a soloist at the National Concert Hall. He was a multiple prize-winner at various National Feis Ceoil singing competitions, and was awarded the 2010 John McCormack Society’s Bursary for the Most Promising Young Singer, in addition to the Most Promising Young Singer at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
He was delighted to be offered a place in the internationally-renowned Irish music group Celtic Thunder, and over the past two years has toured the United States, Canada, and Australia with the group. Celtic Thunder’s latest CD, Mythology, was launched earlier this year and entered the Billboard World Album charts at number one.
Tour dates have been announced for Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Europe, and Asia in 2014 - as well as two dates in his hometown of Mullingar. Local causes are very close to Emmet’s heart, and the proceeds of both concerts will go to the North Westmeath Hospice.
You can spend ‘An Evening with Emmet Cahill’ at Mullingar Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday July 26 and 27 at 8pm. Tickets are available (€20/€15 ) from the box office at (044 ) 9347777.
