Reigning county and all-Ireland club champions St Brigid’s begin the defence of their titles as the Roscommon senior football championship kicks off this weekend. The Saints have home advantage when they meet Western Gaels in Kiltoom on Saturday evening at 7pm. Naturally Brigid’s will be hot favourites to retain their title, but with Frankie Dolan and Cathal McHugh amongst others who will not feature in the opening round I expect Western Gaels to push them close.
Last year’s beaten county finalists Padraig Pearses also have the benefit of home advantage when they welcome St Faithleach’s to Woodmount on Saturday evening. Pearses have been operating out of division 2 in the league which is not ideal preparation while St Faithleach’s are moving well in senior league. With that said with the three Dalys on board and plenty of other up-and-coming talent I expect Pearses to make a winning start.
Clann na nGael have serious injury concerns ahead of their championship opener against Kilmore with key players including Donie and Cathal Shine ruled out. Despite this Clann will be hoping they can make a winning start.
