Westmeath’s citizens are beng encouraged to have their say on the way in which TDs are elected to Dáil Éireann.
The way politicians are elected to the Dáil is to be debated at the next meeting of the Convention on the Constitution. In advance of the gathering, chairman of the Convention, Tom Arnold, has urged local people to participate by submitting their views and suggestions on the Dáil electoral system.
“I am inviting the citizens of County Westmeath to have their say on this very important matter. In advance of our discussions and ballot on the Dáil electoral system, we are keen to get a broad perspective of public opinion on the current system and alternative proposals that people may have,” said Mr Arnold.
The Longford-Westmeath constituency is currently represented by four TDs - Deputies Willie Penrose (Lab ), James Bannon (FG ), Nicky McFadden (FG ), and Robert Troy (FF ).
Members of the public, along with the diaspora and representative groups, are being asked to make their voices heard in advance of the discussion. The submissions will help to form the work programme for the debate.
Submissions can be made through the Convention website at www.constitution.ie, and the closing date for submissions is Friday May 24.
