Counselling is a type of talking therapy that allows a person to talk about their problems and feelings in a confidential environment.
Usually individuals choose to go to counselling because they are experiencing difficulties and distress in their lives. Even where an individual has supportive family and friends, they can find it difficult to explain why. You do not have to be in crisis before attending counselling. You may be experiencing underlying feelings of dissatisfaction with life in general, or be seeking balance in your life and spirituality.
Counselling can help you to understand yourself and your problems better; cope with a bereavement or relationship breakdown, redundancy or work-related stress; explore issues such as sexual identity; deal with issues that are preventing you from achieving your ambitions, negative feelings or sadness, and have a more positive outlook on life; feel more confident; or develop a better understanding of other people’s points of view.
In most cases, it takes a number of sessions before the counselling starts to make a difference, and a regular commitment is required. It can be a great relief to share your worries and fears with someone who acknowledges your feelings and is able to help you reach a positive solution.
When an individual contacts the service, they have an initial meeting with the service manager and they are then assigned to the most suitable therapist to meet their needs. A client is usually seen within a week. The service is totally confidential. The cost per session is €10.
