Public meeting in Athlone to discuss job creation in renewable energy

A State agency is to host a meeting in Athlone this week to look at promoting job creation in renewable energy in rural Ireland.

The Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA ) will host a public meeting in Athlone Institute of Technology on Thursday May 9 at 7.15pm.

The aim of the meeting is to identify job creation opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

CEDRA - chaired by former Kerry football legend Pat Spillane - was set up by the Government in 2012 to examine issues affecting rural Ireland and to ensure that economic recovery reaches rural Ireland.

Presently CEDRA is accepting witten submissions on the topic of rural development, and will continue to do so until June 30.

“We will use all the information we gather from all sources to identify the key issues, and to inform our development of a job creation strategy and the recommendations which follow from this,” said a CEDRA spokesperson.

“Our task is to develop a jobs strategy that will allow rural areas benefit from, and contribute to national economic recovery. The strategy will identify critical challenges facing rural economic development, identify opportunities for further development of existing enterprises, and establish the potential for the creation of new jobs and enterprises,” he continued.

Submissions will only be accepted at the following two addresses: Dr David Meredith, Teagasc, Ashtown, Dublin 15 or by email to [email protected]
