Homeless service expands to meet increasing demand

The Midlands Simon Community is expanding its services to meet the needs of those experiencing homelessness across the Midlands.

During 2012 Midlands Simon reported that it worked with over 100 people every day across the four midland counties of Westmeath, Offaly, Longford, and Laois.

Over the past year, Midlands Simons doubled the number of emergency accommodation beds operated in the region by opening a new service in Tullamore which provides six emergency beds on a 24/7 basis, in addition to a six-bed emergency accommodation service based in Athlone. In total Midlands Simon provided 47 people with emergency accommodation in 2012.

Midlands Simon also received 103 referrals to its regional settlement service in 2012. This service works with people who are at risk and/or who are experiencing homelessness, helping individuals to find accommodation, move into their new home, and maintain their new home.

Reviewing the progress made in 2012, CEO of Midlands Simon Tony O’Riordan said,“There is a growing demand for Midlands Simon services, but thankfully with the support of the community and our volunteers we were able to reach out to those who need us most. We face considerable challenges to raise the necessary funds to maintain services. With the continued goodwill of the local authorities, the HSE, and the community we will continue to be able to support people to move from the insecurity of homelessness to the security of having a home of their own.”
