Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe is to benefit from 50 new replacement beds, after plans for an extension ward came through the first stage of approval.
According to a spokesperson for the Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group, the 50-bed replacement ward block was approved at a recent National Capital Steering Group for inclusion in the National Capital Plan. This is the first step in the process and the project will now be put forward for funding approval.
When complete, the new ward block will be used for medical and surgical patients. It will replace existing older ward accommodation to meet current standards. However, it will not provide additional bed capacity in the hospital.
