AIT footballers surpassed many people’s expectations to book their place in the semi-final of the prestigious Sigerson Cup competition of which they were excellent hosts. After two wholehearted performances against Carlow IT and Cork IT it was hoped they could spring another surprise win when they faced up to UCC in the semi-final last Friday.
Unfortunately Martin McCabe’s side were totally outclassed by a physically stronger UCC who eased their way into the final with 11 points to spare. UCC were themselves well beaten in the decider losing out by 3-8 to 0-7 to DIT.
Kieran Martin was AIT’s best player on the day helping himself to four points but in truth the hosts came out second best in most of the individual battles. The bulk of the AIT team will be on board again next year and if they add a few players they could well push for a semi-final spot once again.
The organising committee in AIT deserve tremendous credit for the work they put into hosting the finals. It certainly showed Athlone and AIT in particular in good light.
