Athlone Musical Society will present the musical favourite Oklahoma! in the Dean Crowe Theatre from Saturday March 2 to Saturday March 9.
Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colourful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farmgirl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smoothly, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant Oklahoma!
Leading the cast in the role of Curly McLain will be Ken Kennedy. Audiences who loved Ken’s portrayal of Chad in last year’s All Shook Up will be delighted by his performance as Curly, the courteous cowboy. Winner of the 2011 AIMS Best Actress Award, Audrey O’Meara, will play the role of witty farmgirl Laurey Williams. The role of Aunt Eller will be played by Joan Larkin, who is celebrating her 30th year with Athlone Musical Society. Appearing opposite Joan in the role of Andrew Carnes will be Alfie Kilduff, who is also celebrating 30 years of stellar performances. Ollie Berry will take on the role of the dark and brooding farmhand Jud Fry. The eager and wide-eyed cowboy Will Parker will be played by Ultan Keena and appearing opposite him in the role of Ado Annie will be Hilary Orpen, whom audiences will remember as Miss Sandra in te AMS production of All Shook Up last year. Carlos Fidalgo-Romo will take on the iconic comedic role of Ali Hakim, the Persian peddler and Margaret Mulligan will tackle the role of Gertie Cummings in this exciting new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s legendary musical.
The lead performers will be joined on stage by a talented chorus, who were deservedly nominated for the AIMS Best Choral Singing award last year. They are sure to bring the same level of dedication and talent to this year’s production. This is certainly a show not to be missed.
