Hibernian goes green in Westmeath

Hibernian’s Westmeath branch in Mullingar is going green, following the decision by Hibernian Group, Ireland’s leading multi-line insurance company, to award a two year green energy supply contract to competitive electricity provider Energia. Hibernian has 30 locations in Ireland including 27 branches nationwide and three regional centres in Dublin, Cork, and Galway.

In addition to enhanced environmental sustainability, the new supply deal will also reduce Hibernian’s energy bills. The deal covers 30 sites nationwide and the electricity requirement of 8.8 GWh (Gigawatt Hours ) is the equivalent of supplying almost 1,900 homes.  The new green energy deal is an important element of Hibernian’s commitment towards sustainable practices and will represent an annual reduction of around 4,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) from the atmosphere each year.

Hibernian’s parent company, Aviva, was the first insurance company globally to commit to making all its operations carbon neutral.

Commenting on the deal, Sharon Leavy, manager of Hibernian’s Mullingar branch said: “As well as looking out for the needs of our 1.2 million customers throughout Ireland, Hibernian is also committed to looking out for the environment, by making our operations as efficient and environmentally friendly as possible, both in Westmeath and our other nationwide branches.”

“Over the past year, Hibernian has implemented a number of innovative initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint and this deal with Energia is one more example of that commitment.  It’s also an example of the benefit of shopping around as Hibernian has been able to reduce its energy costs while also removing 4,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum,” said Ms Leavy.

Energia offers an energy efficiency programme to its customers which, if fully embraced, can reduce energy consumption by up to 20 per cent. Gary Ryan Sales and Marketing Director Energia comments: “We are delighted to work with Hibernian to supply green energy for their 30 sites across Ireland.  Switching to Energia is simple and offers substantial savings.  We work with companies and public sector organisations throughout the country to deliver cost effective energy solutions that deliver real value for money.”

A member of the Viridian Group, Energia has 250MW of renewable electricity capacity contracted within its energy portfolio, the majority of which is operational with a further 300MW of wind farm projects currently in development across Ireland.

Energia also sources conventional power from the Group’s power stations in north Dublin, where the company has invested €500 million with the capability to supply up to 17 per cent of electricity requirements on an all-island basis.

Energia has a 25 per cent market share of the business electricity market on an all–island basis with 40,000 customers. The company also supplies one third of all gas consumed in Ireland by the country’s largest industrial and commercial gas users.

Energia has offices in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Belfast and Omagh.
