A book of condolence has been opened in the public office of Athlone Garda Station on Pearse Street to allow the public offer their support to local officers in the wake of the murder of their colleague in Louth.
Several Athlone-based members of An Garda Siochána travelled to Dundalk, Co Louth on Wednesday (January 30 ) to pay their respects to slain comrade, Detective Garda Adrian Donohue.
The 41-year-old father of two was shot dead last Friday night by a murdering gang of thieves outside the Lordship Credit Union in Kentstown, Co Louth as he went with a colleague to escort the day’s takings to a more secure location.
“Lots of people came in to offer their sympathies even before it [the book of condolences] was started. It was driven and motivated by the public which was a lovely touch,” said Sergeant Andrew Haran of Athlone Garda Station.
“We’ve had letters and cards as well. I literally have a card in my hand at the moment. There’s been a lovely reaction from the people of Athlone,” he added.
“A lot of lads went from here yesterday (Wednesday ) [for the funeral], both in uniform and on their own,” he went on.
“The reaction in Athlone has been nice. You’d normally feel you’d have the support of the community, you’d hope you’d have this, but it is nice to be shown this support,” he concluded.
