NUIG 3-15
Westmeath 0-16
A final quarter hat-trick from Galway’s Niall Burke proved the difference between the sides in this Walsh Cup clash played on the 3G pitch in St Loman’s. After a scrappy first half in which the home side registered no less than 13, wides the sides were level on 0-8 a piece.
After the break it was still nip and tuck with the sides level with 0-13 each at the end of the third quarter. The three majors from Niall Burke, the first coming in the 57th minute, were enough to send the students safely through to the next round where Kilkenny await.
While defeat means that Brian Hanley’s side exit the cup competition he is hardly too disappointed to be avoiding an early season clash with Kilkenny. His side have the consolation of a Walsh Shield clash with DIT this Sunday and which allow him a further opportunity to experiment with his squad.
