The Westmeath senior hurlers have their first competitive action of the new season with a home tie against NUIG in Kinnegad on Sunday at 2pm. Brian Hanley’s charges will be hoping to get off to a winning start though they face a tough battle with the students who are gearing up for the upcoming Fitzgibbon cup campaign. The college side recently drew with Galway champions St Thomas’s so that gives some indication of their worth.
Like his footballing counterpart Pat Flanagan, Hanley is sure to use the competition to experiment and blood new talent. A win would set up a meeting with All-Ireland champions Kilkenny on Sunday week.
