Leinster colleges championship gets underway

The Leinster colleges championship gets underway today (Friday ) with a number of local schools in action. Athlone Community College take on Ardscoil na Trionoide in AIT at 1pm. While the Community College were victorious in the north Leinster League, championship provides an even greater challenge and this opening game is very much a banana skin for the league champions.

Athy were unlucky to lose out in extra time in their league semi-final to Good Counsel, New Ross so there will be no room for complacency from the home side. ACC will be looking for big performances from the likes of Michael Mcmahon (Caulry ), Martin Flannery, (Clann na Gael ), Ronan Daly (Padraig Pearses ), Ray Connellan and Mattie Darling (Athlone ), Brian Shaughnessy and Eoin McCormack (Ballinasloe ), and Eric Kearney (Garrycastle ).

Meanwhile at 2pm in Hogan Park, Moate CS should prove too strong for St Benildus (Dublin ). Peter Tormey and JP Casey’s side have been performing well in recent weeks and home advantage should help see them clear the first hurdle.
