Two brothers and a cousin arrested for their alleged involvement in an assault in Mullingar on New Year’s Day, were each released on highly conditional bails in the District Court in Athlone on Wednesday (January 2 ).
Garda Brian Craven gave evidence how Mindaugas (28 ), Modastus (28 ), and Martinus (23 ) Kuprenas, with addresses in Belvedere Hills, and Dalton Park, Mullingar, were arrested after the alleged assault in Dalton Park on the evening of January 1.
The alleged injured party is the father-in-law of Martinus, Garda Craven explained, and all three were detained in custody until the next available court, which was the following day in front of Judge Seamus Hughes in Athlone.
Garda Craven told how the alleged victim received 15 staples to a head wound, and was kept overnight, but was expected to be discharged that morning.
He also referred to an incident the previous night in a local hostelry which may, or may not have been the catalyst to this incident, but because it is still an open investigation details of it are not yet permitted for publication.
Garda Craven said there was no Garda objection to bail as long as all three abide by a series of conditions.
All three had to abide a 10pm-8am curfew, surrender their passports, sign on three days a week at the Garda station, and remain sober.
Mindaugas and Modastus must remain at their address in Belvedere Hills, while Martinus must have no contact with the Crichton family “who live only two terraces up” from him.
Judge Hughes remanded all three to appear in Mullingar District Court on February 14.
