Take a trip back to Paris during the war with Athlone Film Club, who are delighted to be bringing the historical drama Free Men to the Dean Crowe Theatre next Tuesday November 13 at 8pm.
Inspired by true events, this gripping espionage drama recounts the often overlooked collaboration between Arab émigrés and the French Resistance during World War II.
Unemployed Algerian immigrant Younges survives in 1942 Paris by working as a black marketeer, but like all who exist in such a precarious environment, he’s living on borrowed time. When the law finally catches up with him, he’s given the choice of prison or spying on the inhabitants of a local Mosque who are suspected of harbouring Jews and resistance fighters and passing them off as Muslims.
This unfamiliar story of World War II chronicles the transformation of an apolitical cynic into a dedicated freedom activist who takes a stand against tyranny and hatred. The film starts at 8pm and you can come along at 7.30pm for a complimentary wine reception.
All are welcome and tickets are available at the door.
