Conor Brady, who served as editor of The Irish Times from 1986 to 2002, is the newest director at the independent radio station Midlands 103. A native of Tullamore in County Offaly, Mr Brady has deep connections with the Midlands and retains a cottage in the Slieve Bloom mountains.
Welcoming Mr Brady to the board, managing director Albert Fitzgerald described him as a “distinguished journalist who will bring a wealth of media experience to the station”. Midlands 103 is already recognised for its quality news and current affairs, receiving top honours for its output at the PPI Radio Awards ceremony in Kilkenny recently.
In addition to Conor Brady, the company also appointed prominent Midlands businessman Christy Maye as a director. Mr Maye was a founding father of the Irish disco scene and has extensive retail and hospitality interests in both Tullamore and Mullingar. Albert Fitzgerald hopes the appointment will help the station to successfully navigate through the present economic challenges, adding, “We are one of the few media outlets to have not implemented pay cuts since the crisis began and we have, through the hard work of a talented team, remained profitable, and successful. The new directors will be instrumental in enhancing both our product and business proposition.”
Midlands 103 is one of the most popular local radio stations in Ireland, with a weekly audience of 123,000 adults. It has been broadcasting since 1990 and opened its new purpose-built headquarters in Tullamore in 2008.
