Booze pirate gets date for “reckoning”

A teenager who stole a load of alcohol from the Viking boat, and then had to have a doctor brought to the Garda station after consuming his booty, will have to wait until the end of November to hear his sentence, a court learnt this week (September 19 ).

“I want to say the Viking boat is no stranger to pillaging,” deadpanned Mr Padraig Quinn, the solicitor for 18-year-old Dylan Tumelty, of Manor Valley, Monksland.

Tumelty, along with two juveniles who have already been dealt with by the courts, broke onto the tourist vessel at around 7am on July 22 whilst it was moored behind the Radisson hotel, and stole up to 20 bottles of champagne, vodka, whiskey, and wine.

“Judge, they were arrested shortly after on Abbey Road. They had drunk most of the alcohol,” said Inspector Aidan Minnock.

“Twenty bottles? I fancy most probably ended up as fertiliser in that area,” mused Judge Seamus Hughes.

“He was in some considerable state when arrested. In the station he had no recollection of the incident, and the doctor had to be called,” the inspector confirmed.

Mr Quinn told how Tumulty was accompanied to court by his father, was repeating the Leaving Cert, and was now living outside the town with his mother.

Judge Hughes suggested adjourning sentencing for a probation report, and imposing a curfew until his next court date.

“You are reading his father’s mind,” said Mr Quinn.

Inspector Minnock also suggested that the defendant’s conditions of bail include that Tumulty not associate with four named individuals, and Judge Hughes agreed.

“No contact means no emailing them, or twittering them. You’ll be kept on a short leash, or you will go to prison. It’s your choice,” warned the judge.

“You’re not enjoying today’s experience, are you? It’s great fun on the river bank, swigging out of bottles, but there’s always a day to be reckoned with,” concluded the judge, before remanding Tumulty on continuing bail until November 21.
