Simon Community benefit from inaugural Mayor’s Fund

The Midlands Simon Community were delighted to be one of the chosen charities to benefit from the first ever Athlone Mayor’s Charity Fund, set up by former mayor Cllr Alan Shaw who recently came to the end of his term as mayor.

Cllr Shaw presented the Midlands Simon Community with a cheque for €1,000 this week towards their ongoing work to put an end to homelessness in the region.

During his time as mayor from June 2011 to June this year, Cllr Shaw launched a new Mayor’s Charity Fund, stating during his inauguration speech that he wanted to support those in the community experiencing difficulties, particularly during recessionary times when charities are finding increasing demands on their services with insufficient resources.

Speaking as he made the presentation this week, Cllr Shaw described Midlands Simon as an organisation that works in the community for the community, and which is a deserving recipient of the Mayor’s Charity Fund.

CEO of Midlands Simon, Tony O’Riordan, thanked the mayor for choosing their charity.

“Having a home is a right and Midlands Simon Community are determined to ensure that the homeless in the Midlands region continue to be housed and supported.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Alan Shaw for all of his help and support during his term, and wish him well in his future endeavours, and also take the opportunity to welcome incoming Mayor Jim Henson, who we would look forward to any opportunity to work with,” he added.
