The Great Taste Awards, the Oscars for the food industry organised by the Guild of Fine Food in England, recently announced its winners for 2012, a number of which are available in Ireland.
Tesco received over 40 awards with 21 of those awards going to Irish-produced, own-label products including Tesco Finest Irish Canadian Maple Rashers, Tesco Finest Irish Hickory Smoked Back Rashers, and Irish Angus Sirloin (Rump ) Steaks, which are produced by Hilton Foods. Tesco also received awards for its pork, lamb, fruit juice, and oat products – including Tesco Finest Moroccan Cous Cous (produced by Nature’s Best ) and Tesco Roast Beef (produced by Brady Family ).
At the same event Lidl scooped 19 awards, some of which were for foods produced by Irish suppliers. Lidl’s stars this year included options from its Deluxe range such as Premium Irish Smoked Maple Cure Rashers, Champagne Rhubarb yoghurt, Whole Irish Duckling. Dundalgan Irish Whiskey, Irish Cream Liqueur, Irish Premium Yoghurt Canadian Blueberries (if that’s not a little confusing ), and Irish Organic Hot Smoked Salmon, among others.
