Making Space Studios open today in Athlone

A new art project is to launch this evening, Friday August 18, in Athlone, in the form of the Making Space Studios.

The launch takes place at the Making Space art studio at 15 Custume Place (above Burgess Department Store ) at 7pm this evening, and is open to the public. Work from studio artists will be exhibited and on sale, and there will be a wine reception, finger food, and music.

Making Space Studios is an artist-run studio space and is the headquarters and work space of the Making Space Collective.

It is a non-commercial space facilitating contemporary visual art practices. As well as working on projects collectively, the artists involved encourage individual art practice and are committed to furthering the visibility of art in Athlone.

The Making Space Collective is a non-profit multi-disciplinary art group made up of artists, designers, musicians, writers, social architects, and other academics. They are an inclusive art group who create interventions, interrupt the everyday, and are making space for contemporary art.

It is supported by Westmeath County Council, Athlone Chamber of Commerce, and Hynes Real Estate.

If you would like to get involved in group projects or find out what’s happening in the collective, come to the monthly group meeting which is the first Wednesday of every month in the studios.

The studio holds open days, exhibitions, and group projects as well as being a work space. Please email [email protected] if you would like to call into the studio at any other time. Making Space will also hold an open studio night for Culture Night 2012 on Friday September 21, with activities and events to be confirmed shortly.
