Legend Feniuk “safe” after Mumbai terror

Former Athlone Town soccer player Stefan Feniuk is reported as “safe and well” and on his way home after he was caught up in the terror attacks yesterday (November 25 ) in Mumbai, India.

“He’s fine, thanks be to God,” said his mother-in-law, Molly Conroy from Iona Park.“They got him out alright, he’s safe and on a plane”.

Feniuk, who was on the last two championship winning Athlone Town teams in 1980-81 and 1982-83, was on a business trip to Mumbai with Ericssons from his present base in Brighton when the Deccan Mujahadeen burst into his hotel lobby and opened fire.

It is believed one man died in this outburst but staff took up to 50 of the guests to a safe room and thence to the US embassy where they were issued with temporary exit visas.

According to Molly, because of the attack all the hotel residents had to leave all their belongings in their rooms and “leave in what they were standing in”.

Feniuk started his career with Ericssons when in Athlone and lived in Willow Park for 12 years.

Apart from the two titles he won with the last great Town team, Stef was on a League of Ireland selection that travelled to Argentina in 1983 and he played against the national team which included the great Maradona.
