€275k improvements for Burgess Park

A running track, arboretum, and extra lighting are just some of the developments on the cards for Burgess Park in the coming year.

Town engineer Alan Kelly announced plans for the upcoming Burgess Park extension, which will cost in the region of €275,000.

The existing boulevard is to be lengthened and the amphitheatre to be relocated further from the rear of the park in the hope of discouraging antisocial behaviour. A running path is also to be provided.

The news was welcomed by Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran who said the improvements are “badly needed”.

Cllr Mark Cooney said Burgess Park is “a marvellous facility” which unfortunately has been abused.

“It is important to get the message out there that vandalism won’t be tolerated. Can I ask that we ensure there is adequate lighting so the chances of vandalism are reduced, and that CCTV cameras are located there occasionally,” he suggested.

Cllr Sheila Buckley-Byrne particularly welcome the running track, asking that it be well lit.

“The natural surveillance in this area is not huge, but it would improve if we build up the amount of runners and walkers,” she added.

Meanwhile Cllr Paul Hogan said that the more people using the area, the less chance there would be of vandalism, graffiti, fires, or damage to trees, which had occurred in the past.
