The popular Race of the South Walderstown, Athlone takes place on Saturday and Sunday July 14 and 15 at Walderstown. This is the 13th race that has been run on this circuit, and the event has attracted all the top competitors in motorcycling over the years. This year is no different with the Dunlop Bros, Ryan Farquhar, Derek Sheils, Paul Robinson, Michael Sweeney, Jamie Hamilton, and Alan Kenny to name but a few; Westmeath competitors Derek McGee, Noel Brennan, Damian Horan, and Brendan Flynn; as well as competitors from the 32 counties, England, Scotland, Wales, and the Isle of Man.
This event could not take place without the cooperation of the residents of Walderstown and surrounding area. The organisers would like to thank Westmeath Community Development and the Rural Development (LEADER ) Programme 2007-2013 under which Fore Motorcycle Racing Club were awarded grant aid to promote the Races of the South 2012. They are also grateful to Westmeath County Council’s indoor and outdoor staff for their road works and cooperation, the Gardaí in Moate and Athlone, and also local hospitals in Mullingar, Tullamore, and Ballinasloe, as well as their sponsors, volunteers, club members, competitors, and all the people who turn up on the weekend of the races to help out.
Roads close for a practice on Saturday July 14 at 12.30pm and on Sunday at 11am for racing. The first race takes place on Sunday July 15 at 11.15am. Come early and obey the marshals, who are there for your safety.
