The prospect of a playground in Castledaly got a little closer this week (June 22 ), when the committee behind the plan hosted its second fundraising event with a race night in Fitzgeralds.
Earlier this year a group of young mothers from the village came together and learned that the Government supported such community projects through the LEADER initiative to the tune of 75 per cent, with the balance raised through local fundraising.
“Our first fundraiser was a table quiz in March, and the race night went very well.It was very well supported,” said treasurer Paula Finan.
“We would hope to have it [the playground] up and running by next spring. We’re getting a very positive response from the people of Castledaly,” she added.
Ms Finan wanted to convey the committee’s gratitude to the local GAA club which has provided the site for the playground, and to Westmeath County Council “who have been very helpful”.
Already the project has been put up on eTender, the website for all State tendering. The project is costed in the region of €55,000.
