Shamans, in Ireland called spiritual healers, are the keepers of a body of spiritual techniques used to maintain good health, or to heal ourselves and others. Shamans use meditation, visualisation, yoga, massage, prayer, poetry, songs, or drumming to induce altered states of consciousness, so that the patient relaxes their body, allowing healing to take place at a subconscious level. When the body is deeply relaxed, tension disappears, the racing mind slows down, and the body’s own natural healing mechanism steps in.
The ancient Druids of Ireland were the Shamanic healers of their time, using herbs, spells, and ritual to heal the sick. Today, Shamanic knowledge survives primarily among people who until quite recently had primitive cultures. However in Irish society, many of us readily accept that there are people who have the power to heal, who we accept have the ‘cure’ for warts, skin diseases, broken bones, etc.
John Picard of Achbusters has been studying healing and Shamanism for 20 years, and incorporates Shamanic techniques of meditation, drumming, massage, and prayer into his healing practice.
