The long wait continues. Yet again hopes of success at minor level received a major setback as Tom Carr’s minor side slumped to a humiliating 10- point defeat to Louth in their opening Leinster championship game.
Westmeath enjoyed much the better of the exchanges in the opening half and entered the break leading 0-6 to 0-3. In truth they should have been further ahead but on the day the forward unit failed to fire.
Louth, with home advantage, upped their performance after the break but remarkably the Westmeath challenge fell asunder as they failed to register a single score for the duration of the second half.
Louth dominated the midfield exchanges in the second period and with the Westmeath rearguard at sixes and sevens it was no surprise when Louth bagged their first goal midway through the half. The final nail in the Westmeath coffin came from a goalkeeping error with five minutes remaining and presented Louth with their second major win.
Carr and his selectors have plenty of food for thought as they attempt to regroup before their next outing in the backdoor route. They face the winners of Wexford and Carlow on May 2.
