Tom Carr’s Westmeath minor footballers begin their Leinster championship with a tricky away fixture to Louth tomorrow (Saturday, Haggardstown, 3pm ).
Carr’s side will be looking for big performances from the likes of Ray Connellan (Athlone ), Justin Barrett (Garrycastle ), Michael McMahon ( Caulry ), Lorcan Dolan (Castledaly ), and Kinnegad duo Ger Leech and Ryan Cafferky. The latter two have only recently rejoined the panel having being part of St Mary’s Edenderry historic all-Ireland colleges winning side. Leech kicked eight points in the Hogan Cup final underlining his class.
Louth with home advantage will be no pushovers having been very competitive, two years ago at u16 level. While the losers will not be eliminated completely from the competition a win would put them through to a Leinster quarter-final and if Carr’s side play to their potential they should get off to a winning start.
