New website provides advice to Westmeath’s young scientists

Young scientists in Westmeath will be able to access some of the top experts in US multinational companies in Ireland as they prepare their entries for the 2009 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland has launched a new website www.askus.ie which enables students to connect with experts in 40 companies and individuals throughout Ireland. These experts have volunteered to answer students’ questions for free so that they can present the best project possible for the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.  Among the companies volunteering their time and expertise are Cook Medical, EMC, IBM, KPMG, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Microsoft, Pfizer, and Wyeth Biotech.

Dr Peter Hetherington, chair of the research and development education group with the American Chamber of Commerce and Director of EHS, Pfizer said, “The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is a wonderful initiative which brings science to the core of the education curriculum in Ireland. The website www.askus.ie will not only provide access to expertise and state-of-the-art technology to students preparing a project for the exhibition, it will also give them an insight into how people with science, maths and engineering qualifications are working in industry throughout Ireland.  We hope it will demonstrate in a tangible way the valuable career paths open to graduates in these disciplines and encourage more students to pursue studies in these disciplines.”

Chris Clark, CEO of BT said: “We are delighted that the American Chamber of Commerce is supporting Ireland’s young scientists with the launch of www.askus.ie To have access to some of the brightest experts in Ireland is a wonderful resource for BT Young Scientist entrants and will help support an increase in the quality of entries participating in the competition.”

The American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland represents the interests of US multinational companies in Ireland. Today there are over 300,000 people directly and indirectly employed in US companies throughout Ireland.
