Calls for transfer of land to Garrycastle GAA

A small plot of land to the rear of FAS in Garrycastle became the subject of discussion at last week’s Athlone area meeting, as Cllr Frankie Keena requested the land be handed over to Garrycastle GAA Club.

“Under a previous agreement by this council to dispose of a landlocked plot of land to the rear of FAS to Garrycastle GAA Club, I am now requesting that as much as possible of this land be disposed of immediately to this club and the remainder following the completion of the traffic management proposals in the area,” said Cllr Keena.

The councillor pointed out that a decision on the land has been on hold for the past seven or eight years, and that additional training facilities were needed by the club.

However, he was informed that the plot could not be transferred to the club until road proposals for the area are finalised, which would be done “as soon as possible”, according to the council.

“In the meantime, if Garrycastle GAA Club requires a particular portion of the lands to execute a particular project, then they should document their requirements and these will be considered by the council’s roads section,” read the response.

“If the club has immediate need of the land, for example to accommodate the corner of a training pitch, we will look at this. We will put it on a map and examine it and come to an agreement. However we won’t draw a line on the map now and say certain land is to go to the GAA,” added director of services Barry Kehoe.
