A jury made up of five of the world’s top photographers have named Corin Bishop as the winner of the Contemporary Wedding category at the IPPA Professional Photographer of Year Awards 2012. With over 300 members in the IPPA, the awards represent the best in professional photography in Ireland. Hundreds of images were submitted to the awards programme and with such exceptionally high standards, to come top in the Contemporary Wedding category is a fantastic achievement.
The final decisions were in the hands of a heavyweight quintet: Kevin Wilson, Barry McCall, David Cantwell, Mick Quinn, and Gareth Byrne - all of whom are Fellows of the IPPA and all of whom have received multiple high honours in their careers. Marshalling them was Vinnie O’Byrne, the association’s chairman of judging and himself laden with accolades and distinctions from around the world.
Corin Bishop said, “I’m thrilled to have won such a prestigious award. Entering the awards programme is a nerve-wracking process and takes a lot of hard work during the year so to be judged a winner really means a lot. I firmly believe that Ireland has some of the best photographers in the world. This shows when you look at the international competitions and how well the Irish photographers do on a world stage.”
The winning portfolio featured photographs from one wedding in New York. Irish couple Conor Mulligan (from Garnafailia ) and Jeanita Pender from Dublin got hitched in New York and asked Corin to take the photographs. The location made a wonderful backdrop to their wedding, incorporating famous Manhattan landmarks into their wedding photographs.
Corin Bishop is a portrait and wedding photographer based in Athlone. He started his photography business in Athlone, and since 2003 has brought world-class professional photography to the people of the Midlands. He is no stranger to awards having previously won Children’s Photographer of the Year, Pictorial Photographer of the Year, Best Children’s and Best Classic Portrait Awards. He has also been a top 10 finalist in the European Photography Awards for the last two years. On a world stage he was ranked 15 at the 2010 International Aperture Awards (now Loupe Awards ) in the portrait category.
