Marist off to a flyer with victory over Athlone Community College

Marist 2-10

ACC 1-09

The Marist under 14s got off to a fantastic start in the North Leinster Juvenile Championship with a hard fought victory over local rivals Athlone Community College.

The Marist College started well with early points from John Gormley and Seamus Byrne. Further points from Evan O’Roarke, Ciaran Prendergast, Tommy McCoy, and a further goal from Seamus Byrne extended the Marist lead.

It was in the second quarter when ACC got into gear taking some excellent scores; however, excellent defending from attacking wing backs Robert Ashe, Daniel Boland, and Eoghan O'Reilly kept the ACC's scoring threat to a minimum. The Marist fought back with two more points from Byrne and Gormley before the break to send them in at half time with a six point lead

ACC came roaring out in the second half reducing the Marist lead to just three points half way through the second half. However the turning point in the game arrived with fifteen minutes to go when ACC were denied on two occasions with excellent saves from Marist goalkeeper Thomas Finnerty. The Marist, gaining heart ,rifled over two more scores from Roarke and Allen followed by a goal from the mercurial forward Luke Dully, ensuring that the Marist ran out deserving winners on a score line of 2-10 to 1-9.

Outstanding for the Marist were the goalkeeper Thomas Finnerty, Eoghan O'Reilly, TJ Fox, Evan Roarke, John Gormley, and Seamus Byrne. However, for his relentless work rate, man of the match has to go to the midfield maestro Cormac Langan.

The Marist under 14s next outing is on Thursday November 20 against Saint Mary’s Mullingar.
