Charity night in aid of Motor Neurone Research

Neighbours and friends of RTÉ sports journalist and Moate native Colm Murray are banding together to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Research Group.

Inspired by the recent RTÉ documentary on Colm and his fight with Motor Neurone Disease, locals decided to host a race night to raise much-needed funds for research.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Pauline Kane, one of the organisers and old neighbour of Colm’s said that friends and family were inspired by Colm’s fight and wanted to do something to support the charity.

The race night will take place in the Grand Hotel, Moate on Saturday March 24 with all funds raised going to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Research Group. And Colm will be there on the night to support the cause.

Everyone is welcome to show their support; you can sponsor a race for €10, buy a horse for €20, buy a jockey for €10, or buy and horse and jockey for €30, or why not donate a prize? Everyone is welcome to come along on the night and show their support, all bets are €1. And winning owners will be entered into a draw for cash prizes. There will also be a Best Hat prize and a door raffle, tickets for this cost €2.

For more information call or text Pauline on (087 ) 2903036 or Carmel on (086 ) 3934213.

Colm himself began to notice symptoms in 2009 and was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease in March of 2010.

In the documentary aired on RTÉ One MND - The Inside Track Colm brought the true reality of his condition and his campaign to a broader public.
