All-Ireland beckons for Athlone athletes

The Athlone Community College senior girls athletics team have made it through to the All-Ireland finals in St Mary’s College, Galway on March 10. The team of Laura McIntaggart, Sionann O’Reilly Collins, and Katie Kelly ran for the school in the Connaught Cross Country Championships during a break in their mock Leaving Cert exams.

With limited training due to concentration on their studies, the girls had an excellent race with Sionann and Katie coming in the top 10, and Laura not far behind. The team’s fine performance put them second overall, just six points behind first place. This is the third time in four years this team has got through to the All-Ireland finals.

A few days after this Sionann then went on to swim for Athlone Community College in the All-Ireland senior schools swimming competition, coming fourth in the final of the 100m backstroke; third in the 200m butterfly, and eighth in the 100m freestyle. Sionann helped the team take a bronze in the intermediate relay and fifth in the freestyle relay. The girls are now back to the books studying hard for the upcoming Leaving Cert.
