With February 29 traditionally the one day in every four years that a lady may ask for a gent’s hand in marriage, the Carlton Hotel Group have announced the launch of their Facebook proposal app that allows their fans to request their chosen one’s hand in marriage via social media.
The first documentation of this practice dates back to 1288, when Scotland supposedly passed a law that allowed women to propose marriage to the man of their choice in that year. Tradition states they also made it law that any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine. The fine could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves.
The Carlton are offering an extra incentive to ‘pop the question’ online as they are giving away a free wedding to the proposal deemed to be the most popular by their 18,000 Facebook fans. This stunning prize is for a Platinum package wedding for 80 guests in any of Carlton’s four-star hotels nationwide.
