Free introductory art session with Abbey Road artists

Artists in residence at Abbey Road Studios, Athlone are offering members of the public a unique opportunity to sample tuition with the artists themselves, for free, on Tuesday January 24.

This complimentary taster day will be taking place from 11am-1pm and again in the afternoon from 2-6pm.

The session will be held Upstairs@Studio5 above the artists’ studios providing an opportunity for anyone interested in art to explore there creativity. The classes will commence early February for six weeks at a cost approximately €90 for the full course.

Catherine Rock, one of the three Abbey Road artists involved in the creative initiative says, “I aim to run a couple of courses, one entitled ‘Exploring the Abstract’, which will help people to express themselves in paint and colour in an abstract format. The second is ‘A Fresh Approach’ which will explore a non-traditional approach to painting.”

Moate-based artist Lesley Wingfield will be holding a class on techniques to improve your drawing skills. Lesley says of her painting course, “It’s a hands-on class for any level of student who wants to have fun while learning how easy it is to produce an impressive acrylic painting”.

Athlone native Emer O’Connor describes her class on ‘Exploring Drawing’ as being “suitable for anyone at any level of experience in art. The class is about pushing the boundaries of your existing skill level and looking at your art in a different way. This will be excellent for portfolio students wishing to bring a fresh aspect to their portfolios.” Emer is exploring hosting a class on drawing the clothed figure for all levels, which would be particularly useful for secondary level students ahead of their exams.

Come along on Tuesday to chat to the artists, view demonstrations, and experience the atmosphere of the studios. All are welcome to pop in, beginners especially!
