Coolera Dramatic Society are delighted to present their acclaimed production of Myra’s Story by Brian Foster, in Roscommon Arts Centre on Friday January 20.
Starring Castlerea native Mary McDonnell, this is a heart-wrenching one-woman show that has garnered standing ovations wherever it has been performed. Mary made her stage debut with the Castlerea Musical Society, of which her late father, Jack, was a founder member. After moving to Sligo in the early 1980s, she has appeared in numerous award-winning plays and pantomimes with all of Sligo’s community theatre groups, including Everyman Productions and Coolera Dramatic society, and has competed in several All-Ireland Drama Festivals with the latter. In 2000, Mary performed in Duet for One which was named runner-up in the all-Ireland finals in Athlone. Mary has also performed on many occasions with the acclaimed Beezneez Theatre Company who are firm favourites with Roscommon audiences and regular performers at the arts centre. Performing in Roscommon holds a special delight for her, a coming home of sorts.
Brian Foster’s play chronicles the highs and infinite lows of Dublin woman, Myra McLoughlin. Motherless from a young age, and living with a father who clings increasingly to the dubious solace provided by drink, Myra sees marriage as her only way out of a bleak future which already seems pre-destined. Along comes Tommy McLoughlin, and together they dream of a future happiness which will transcend their environment.
This production, the first presentation of this adaptation, is directed by Bobby Jones and will star Mary in a truly astonishing one woman performance, a performance of incredible depth that has left audiences amazed and deeply moved. Please note this show is not suitable for children.
