Left Bank looses 12 parking spaces

Customers and traders in the Left Bank area of Athlone will be without 12 parking spaces for the next seven months.

The spaces located between the castle and River Shannon were blocked off this week for health and safety reasons after the refurbishment of the castle was given the go-ahead.

Speaking to the Advertiser this week, a spokesperson for the Left Bank Traders said that local business owners were given no notice or explanation for the sudden blocking off of the car parking spaces.

“A couple of days barriers went up with ‘Keep Out’ signs. None of the councillors or council workmen got in touch. The shutting down of the car parking spaces was never mentioned to us,” said the Left Bank Traders’ spokesperson.

Newly appointed Town Clerk Edel Martin explained that the car parking spaces around the castle were closed for health and safety reasons as a crane will be on site for the duration (seven months ) of the planned redevelopment of the castle.
