M6 closure in December

A section of the westbound M6 is to close temporarily to traffic for three weeks in December in order for improvement works to take place.

Roscommon County Council has announced it is to close the westbound carriageway of the M6 motorway between junction 13 Athlone (West ) to junction 14 Ballinasloe (East ) for a period of three weeks from Monday December 5 to Friday December 23. The closure is to facilitate pavement improvement works on the stretch of motorway in order to improve drainage.

Motorists wishing to travel west on the M6 from Athlone (West ) to Ballinasloe (East ) should use the R446 (old N6 ) between these dates.

Local councillors John Naughten and Ollie Moore are calling on Roscommmon County Council to take the opportunity to address problems being experienced by adjoining landowners while they are carrying out the M6 works.

The councillors said they have been in contact with a significant number of landowners who are experiencing problems with culverts along this section of the motorway in the Moore, Drum, and Creagh areas.

“It is important that while works are being undertaken on this stretch that works also be carried out to address the problems being experienced by the adjoining landowners,” said Cllr Moore.

Cllr Naughten added: “We will be seeking assurances on this matter from both the NRA and Roscommon County Council”.

The councillors also pointed out that a river survey is being completed in relation to the impact on culverts in the area and they are continuing to pursue this issue.
