Fine Gael TD for Longford/ Westmeath, Nicky McFadden, has today expressed her sympathies to the soldiers and families of those affected by the decision to close Columb Barracks in Mullingar.
“My heart goes out to the families affected by this decision. I have also made representations to Minister Shatter and raised it a number of times in the Dáil.
“It was a very tough decision made by the Government today, but we are in difficult times which require rationalisation measures in many areas, including the Defence Forces. This decision will maximise the effectiveness of the Defence Forces by reducing the costs and overheads associated with the administration, maintenance, and security of the force, which will ultimately strengthen it in the future.”
