Curry worry - restaurant fined for littering

An award-winning Indian restaurant was fined €2,000 plus costs in the District Court earlier this week (November 11 ) for littering offences.

Tendertaste Catering Ltd., which trades as Saagar Indian restaurant on Lloyds Lane in Athlone, was summonsed to answer two charges brought by Athlone Town Council.

The court heard from litter warden Lorraine Derwin how she had noted the first offence at the restaurant on April 16 because it “had bins on the street all the time”.

Ms Derwin explained how she called to the premises on three more occasions - April 24, May 2 and May 19 - but got “no response”.

A letter was sent from the Town Council but no response had been forthcoming.

“Loose waste was visible on the path around the bins,” said Ms Derwin.

Judge Eamonn O’Brien asked Mr Paul Connellan for the Council what the maximum penalty was in this case and was told it was €3,000.

Judge O’Brien fined the company €2,000 and ordered it to pay the Council’s costs.

The costs were not fully established at time of court but are estimated to be in the region of €500.

Neither counsel nor shareholders attended the hearings on behalf of Tendertaste.
