Successful season continues at Athlone Film Club

Athlone Film Club continues its successful first season with the screening of the 2007 Academy Award nominated film The Kite Runner.

The Kite runner is based on the 2005 best selling novel by Khaled Hosseini and it tells the story of Amir, a boy from the Wazir akbar Kahan district of Kabul, who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father’s Hazara servant.

Audiences will be transported to a backdrop of tumultuous events in Afghanistan: from the fall of the monarchy through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.

The scenes set in 21st century Kabul are unflinching in depicting life under the Taliban, such as guards on ‘beard patrols’ and the stoning of adulterers at half time during a football match.

Though most of the film is set in Afghanistan, some scenes had to be set in Kashgar China, due to the dangers of filming in Afghanistan at the time. Indeed Paramount had to relocate the child stars of the film to the United Arab Emirates out of fear for their safety. The film is still banned for viewing in present day Afghanistan.

The Kite Runner with its stunning visuals and haunting story will carry audiences along on Amir’s journey from Kabul to America. A journey not to be missed!

So come along to the Dean Crowe Theatre, Tuesday November 18 at 8pm. Dean Crowe members bring a friend for €7. Pre-screening complimentary wine in the Dean Crowe bar at 7.30pm.
