A profoundly powerful French film at the Dean Crowe Theatre

Athlone Film Club are delighted to present the deeply moving and profoundly beautiful French film, Of Gods and Men (Des hommes et des dieux ) on Tuesday October 18 at 8pm in the Dean Crowe Theatre.

Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers are massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave? Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay - come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996. Alternately harrowing and humbling, this is a story of ordinary men whose compassion is tested in the cruelest, most profound fashion.

It is as powerful a film you'll ever see about faith, commitment, and the courage of one’s convictions.

This is a film that packed audiences in the IFC in Dublin and is one definitely not to be missed. You can come along as a temporary member for the night for only €8. This includes a glass of complimentary wine in the theatre bar from 7.30pm.
