Westmeath’s population has grown by 8.3 per cent in the past five years.
That’s according to the latest figures released by the Central Statistics Office.
There are 6,615 more people living in Westmeath this year than there were in 2006, with the overall population increasing from 79,346 to 85,961.
There was a more marked increase in the female population, with a 9.5 per cent increase in females between 2006 and 2011, compared to a 7.2 per cent increase in the male population.
In Roscommon the population increased by 8.7 per cent, in Longford 13 per cent, and in Offaly 8.4 per cent.
The largest population increase nationally was in Laois, where the population jumped by 20 per cent over the five-year period.
Only Cork city showed a slight decrease in population by 0.4 per cent.
