The Athlone 3/4 marathon is taking place on Sunday October 2. With over 500 people anticipated to take part, benefitting charity Irish Wheelchair Association are looking forward to a great day out. The Athlone 3/4 marathon is a fantastic Dublin City Marathon preparation event. It’s four weeks before the city event and provides an ideal stepping stone from the half-marathon distance. Ireland’s only 3/4 marathon route is 19.664 miles and starts and finishes at the Glasson Hotel and Golf Club. The course takes in magnificent lakeside views around Lough Ree, quiet country roads, and local historical sites.
The organisers of the event this year chose Irish Wheelchair Association as their charity of choice. The IWA is a national organisation dedicated to the achievement of full social, economical, and educational integration of people with disabilities as equal, independent, and participative members of the general community. Funds raised as a result of the Athlone 3/4 marathon will benefit their many members and service users in County Westmeath. Irish Wheelchair Association has two centres in Westmeath – Clonbrusk, Athlone and Mullingar.
According to race director, Barry Minnock, “The event appeals to both walkers and runners, and although the course is challenging, participants have returned after the inaugural event last year. There is something special about running in such a remote location with very few spectators and only nature and your fellow runners to spur you on. We are delighted to be associated with Irish Wheelchair Association this year and are hoping to raise funds to support their services here in Westmeath. We are encouraging as many entrants as possible to contact their fundraising department for sponsorship cards.”
The Athlone 3/4 marathon will start at 11am from race headquarters at Glasson Hotel and Golf Club.
