Lorry jackknifes on Athlone bypass

Two separate investigations are underway after a lorry collided with a road sweeper and jackknifed, coming partially off the Athlone bypass yesterday morning.

Alongside the standard Garda investigation, the Health and Safety Authority is to carry out its own investigation as the road sweeper machinery was operating as part of the ongoing regeneration of the bypass.

Bypass traffic was halted for a short time following the incident, which happened shortly after 10am yesterday [Thursday] morning on the eastbound N6 between junction 12 Roscommon and junction 11 Coosan, close to the Roscommon Road bridge.

The eastbound bypass was closed between these junctions as emergency services removed the lorry and road sweeper, but reopened to traffic shortly afterwards.

The driver of the lorry was brought to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, where his condition is not known.
