Diabetes – a growing problem

The incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes is increasing with early detection having a vital role to play in the management of the condition.

Diabetes Federation of Ireland estimates that in Ireland there are nearly 200,000 people with diabetes and approximately 50,000 of these people are unaware they have diabetes. There are also approximately another 100,000 who have pre-diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common and is a serious condition if left undiagnosed or poorly managed, as it can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, circulation, and nervous system. Type 2 diabetes can also cause heart disease. Research suggests that a healthy lifestyle can prevent Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Early detection is very important, and Cunninghams Pharmacy, Monksland, Athlone is providing free diabetes screening in conjunction with the Diabetes Federation of Ireland on Thursday September 22 from 10am-4pm. You can make an appointment by ringing the pharmacy at (090 ) 6490242 or by calling into the store.
